Salt Water Pool Frequently Asked Questions ( FAQ )

Salt-water pools are NOT chlorine-free pools. A salt-water pool is simply one that utilizes a chlorine generator. Chlorine generators have been around for decades, and as technology and materials continue to evolve, they continue to improve in performance.

Please look at the commonly asked questions below to decide weather a saltwater pool is right for you.

Why Salt Water Pool?

Swimming in a mild saline solution is much like taking a shower in soft water. Generally, when people swim in a traditional chlorine pool (a pool with no saltwater in it) they feel like their skin dries quicker upon exiting the pool. They may feel and/or see a whitish residual, chlorine flaking, on the skin. In a salt-water pool (one with a chlorine generator) the water feels smooth, your skin feels smooth and many people feel more refreshed.

And, for what it’s worth, ocean water has a salt content of around 35,000 parts per million (“ppm”). Humans have a salt taste threshold of around 3,500 ppm. Most chlorine generators require a salt content of 2500 – 3500 ppm in the pool. If the salt content is higher, that warm, salty water will be pretty distasteful!

Why Would I Want Salt Water In My Pool? … I Hate The Ocean!

Actually, by drinking water standards, most salt pools are freshwater. With just a teaspoon of salt per gallon, you won’t notice anything but soft silky water.

My Pump And Filter Are New And I Don’t Want To Change Them. What Do I Do?

A chlorine generator does not replace the pump or filter. With such a mild saline solution, whatever equipment you have now is just fine.

My Kids Have Allergies. Will This Aggravate Them?

Many people report allergy relief from the use of a saltwater pool.

If It’s Still Cleaning The Water With Chlorine, Won’t We Still Have The Same Problems?

The chlorine generator produces a pure, natural form of chlorine that does most of its work in the pipes and then dissipates very quickly.

Our Water Gets Really Warm, Sometimes We Get Leaves Or Junk In The Pool And Algae Is A Problem. Will This Make It Worse?

Chlorine is an excellent algaecide….when applied constantly like with a chlorine generator.

When I Backwash My Filter, The Water Goes On My Lawn. Will Saltwater Kill The Grass?

No. The mild saline solution is not likely to harm anything. It’s probably easier on the lawn than the highly chlorinated water you are now discharging

I’ve Seen Pictures Of Salt Corrosion Damage To Equipment And Stone. What About That?

The modern systems made today work with a much lower salt concentration than a few years ago and no longer cause those problems. PH that is too high or too low can shorten equipment life and etch the plaster but human error is usually to blame in these cases. Lastly, poor-quality stone may not hold up around a pool, no matter what is in the water. The fact is; millions of people have salt pools with absolutely no problems.

Will Salt Damage My Vinyl Liner Pool?

On the contrary; most people report significantly longer vinyl life with saltwater. The greatly reduced level of residual chlorine is much kinder to the vinyl.

How Often Do I Have To Clean The Cell?

With modern self-cleaning systems, most cells only require attention once or twice a season. It’s a ten-minute process done with a mild solution of swimming pool cell cleaner. Your pool professional can do this upon opening or closing.
